Prohibited Items (Residential Living)

Policy Narrative

The following are prohibited for use and/or possession in the residence halls. This is not a comprehensive list. Any other item that is deemed unsafe, inappropriate, or that presents a health and/or safety concern for residential living may be considered prohibited, at the discretion of the Director of Housing and Residence Life or designee.

  1. Adhesive Contact Paper or Mounting Squares
  2. Air conditioners (not issued and installed by the University)
  3. Alcohol/drug paraphernalia (e.g. shot glasses, alcohol themed decor)
  4. Bass and/or subwoofer speakers
  5. Bed Risers
  6. Candles (including those for decoration)
  7. Coffee/Keurig machines without an on/off switch
  8. Electric Bikes, hoverboards, or scooters
  9. Extension cords or electric splitters
  10. Fireworks
  11. Flame-producing item (e.g. lighters, matches, charcoal, etc.)
  12. Flushable Wipes
  13. Halogen lamps
  14. Incense
  15. Items requiring manipulation of piping/furniture (e.g. bidets, personal shower heads, sink water filters, etc.)
  16. Items that damage wall form
  17. LED Strip Lights (adhesives) and non-battery operated string lights
  18. Live Christmas trees, or artificial trees over three feet in height
  19. Microwaves (non-university issued) and/or toaster ovens 
  20. Non fire-rated decorations (e.g. curtains, tapestries, etc) and non flame-retardant items
  21. Open Heating Element Cookware (e.g. Hot plates, grills, or griddles)
  22. Pets (other than fish in a five-gallon tank or smaller)
  23. Refrigerators (large). Students may have up to 2.4 cu ft of refrigerator, per person, per apartment bedroom. Please note, Personal fridges in Canavan Hall are not allowed as each room is equipped with a microfridge
  24. Smoking paraphernalia (e.g. hookas, 
  25. Space heaters
  26. Tattoo equipment
  27. Video / Audio recording devices (e.g. Ring or Arlo)
  28. Waterbeds
  29. Weapons (as defined in this Handbook below)
  30. Wifi-enhancement devices

Purpose of Policy

To create and maintain an equitable environment where students have the optimal opportunity to succeed academically, personally, and professionally and where any and all Daemen University Community members feel safe, valued, and respected.
