UNSUPERVISED ACCESSTO SH110 & 112 – GRADUATE GROSS ANATOMY LAB & STUDY ROOM

1. Hours available for access are 6:00am to midnight daily.

  • Campus Safety typically opens the building at 6:00am and locks the building at midnight.
    • If Schenck Hall is locked on a Saturday or Sunday during these times, you may call Campus Safety (ext.8246) and request admittance. Show your Daemen ID to the guard.
  • When Schenck Hall is being locked for the evening, Campus Safety is requested to check SH110/112 and inform students using the lab that the building is closing.
  • The door lock will block access to the lab on those days when lab practicals are set up. These times will be posted on the bulletin board outside the lab. The study lounge will remain open for usual hours.
  • When Daemen University is closed (e.g. holiday, weather), SH110/112 is closed.

2. Students currently enrolled in PAS510/516, PT504/505 have access via their Daemen ID card, swiped at the reader next to the door handle.

  • An ID card may be used only by the student to whom it was issued.
  • No “guests” are allowed in SH110/112 during unsupervised (by faculty) time.
    • The only exceptions are students who are tutoring/coaching through the Learning Center.
    • Do not open the door from inside – let those entering swipe their own ID.
    • If you wish for a parent, sibling, roommate, etc…to visit the lab, the faculty must give permission and be present in the lab during such visit.

3. Unsupervised student access to the lab is for study only. No dissections are to be performed in the absence of appropriate supervision (e.g. faculty, TAs).

  • A probe is the only instrument allowed to be used during unsupervised lab time.
  • Additionally, smart TVs/monitors are to be used for study only – appropriate use includes things like searching anatomical and medically related terms, viewing study and dissection videos, viewing Complete Anatomy app, etc…

4. Maximum amount of persons in lab during unsupervised (by faculty or TA) time is 15.

  • Study sessions in unsupervised lab are therefore limited to 90 minutes to allow equitable use of the lab for all students.
  • During TA-supervised hours, there may be 24 students in the lab.
  • Study room maximum capacity is 20 students.

5. Without exception, all cadavers/organs/anatomical specimens must be sprayed with Infutrace, covered/zipped in pouch, and table covers closed after use.

  • Any tissue removed/freed from a cadaver during study must be placed in the appropriate tissue container for that cadaver. Absolutely no mixing of tissues between tables/containers.
  • The table and surrounding area including the overhead lighting fixture must be cleaned and free of any tissue or fluid before leaving the lab.

6. All previously published policies and procedures regarding the lab are in effect, unless stated otherwise in this document.

7. Any violation to these policies will result in forfeiture of the privilege to use the room unsupervised.

  • All students present will be held accountable.

8. In the case of an emergency, call Campus Safety at ext. 8246 from the wall phone and for any other problems or assistance, call Dr. Styn at 716.908.7304.

  • Teaching assistant contact information is posted on your Blackboard course site.
